FAQ: Orthodontic issues caused by thumb-sucking

October 27th, 2020

We are excited to see all of you!

May 3rd, 2020

We will be open our normal hours beginning tomorrow, by appointment only, though it will be what we consider a “soft” opening as we work to prioritize appointments and care for patients with more urgent concerns. We will be working with new procedures and equipment in place, and some things will look a little different, but we are excited to see all of you!

Q and A: Is snoring something to be worried about?

January 18th, 2019

Question: My child and my spouse both snore. I always thought that this was a normal thing, but someone mentioned recently that this can be a problem. Is snoring bad for you?

Answer: Snoring is very common, which may be why in the past it was never taken as seriously as it should be. We now know that snoring is often a symptom of an airway problem, which may include sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain -- and the rest of the body -- may not get enough oxygen. In children, sleep apnea can cause behavioral issues and poor performance in school and can even cause symptoms similar to those of ADD. Over time, a child’s brain development can also be affected. In adults, sleep apnea can lead not only to being tired during the day, it can also lead to high blood pressure, stroke, heart conditions, and other serious problems.
Treatment for sleep apnea depends upon the cause. For children, if a small jaw is suspected, we provide a free orthodontic consultation to see if their lower jaw might be small or positioned back too far, or upper jaw too narrow, which can affect the airway. If a child is still growing, we can often use their growth to easily correct these problems with orthodontics and open up the airway without any other treatment needed! If large tonsils or adenoids are suspected, we will refer to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat doctor) to evaluate this. For adults with mild or moderate sleep apnea, we have dental devices available that are often covered by medical insurance and can help solve the problem.
If you suspect that a family member might have sleep apnea, we would love to help. At Oakwood Dental, we have a take-home sleep monitoring device that we can rent out to our patients, and results are read by an MD sleep specialist. Please give us a call for details! 419-562-4378.

Dr Nagy’s Orthodontic Q & A – Vlog Episode 2 | Early intervention Phase 1 orthodontics

December 20th, 2018

In some of the cases shown in these pictures, early braces (also called phase 1 orthodontics) might be beneficial to a young patient. When a child’s upper and/or lower arches are too small, and the teeth are very crowded, it may be difficult for the permanent teeth to have enough space to erupt into the mouth. It has been found that a small arch is the main reason for impacted canines.
Early braces, with often expansion and occasional timely removal of selected baby teeth, can help to make spaces for the adult teeth, and can potentially help prevent:
- having have to remove adult teeth later on
- impaction of adult teeth, that can even lead to root resorption or root shortening.

- Reduce the severity of the case, which makes it easier and faster to treat to an ideal smile later on.

Early braces can also help address other orthodontic problems such as crossbite, underbite, overbite, open bite, and finger sucking among many conditions.

To help prevent these orthodontic problems, Dr. Michelle and Dr. Attila Nagy recommends that children to be evaluated for orthodontic problems and conditions no later than age 6. With early orthodontic diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, many families can potentially prevent a child from having have to undergo extensive, and often expensive orthodontic treatment later on.

At Oakwood Dental, Dr. Michelle and Dr. Attila Nagy offer free consultations and free records for braces. We can let you know if it would be beneficial to have early orthodontic treatment, or if it is appropriate for a child to wait until they are older to begin treatment. We also make it very convenient for our patients, since we can closely monitor a child's teeth when they are in for their preventative cleaning appointment and exam every 6 months.

Once a patient is in braces, as General Dentists we closely monitor dental health and hygiene each time a patient is seen for a braces check. (We can even schedule cleanings to be done on the same day as a braces check so that the wire is taken off allowing us to clean around the brackets completely!) We offer orthodontics for children and adults. Early, phase 1 braces, to comprehensive orthodontics as well. Many adult patients have several options from conventional braces, clear braces, Invisible Lingual braces (Incognito) to Invisalign as well. We love to give ALL of our patients the healthy, beautiful smile they deserve!

Also, at Oakwood Dental, Dr. Michelle and Dr. Attila Nagy donates part of the proceeds from braces, and orthodontic treatment to the Bucyrus community, in the form of “Most improved student” high-school scholarships in the four surrounding school districts.

Know the signs of childhood sleep apnea and prevent life-long disease.

•Breathing pauses during sleep

•Daytime sleepiness

•Difficulty with concentration

Our "Q & A" question last week was: “I have been thinking about straightening my teeth. How do I know if I might be a candidate for Invisalign?”

March 5th, 2015

Our "Q & A" question last week was: “I have been thinking about straightening my teeth. How do I know if I might be a candidate for Invisalign?”

Our thoughts:
Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth without needing to have traditional braces. It involves a series of clear trays that slowly move your teeth to correct minor crowding and crookedness and other minor problems. A lot of patients like Invisalign due to the fact that the trays are barely visible, easy to use, and easy to clean. However if you have moderate to severe crowding or other complications with your bite, you would probably benefit from traditional braces rather than Invisalign.

The best way to know for sure is to have a consultation with your dentist. If you have been advised you should have traditional braces and are worried about esthetics, please also ask about clear brackets. At Oakwood Dental, we offer a free consultation where we listen carefully to what you may want to improve about your smile and to determine the best treatment for you. We offer both Invisalign and traditional braces in our office for many cases, and because we are in-network with many insurance companies and also have offers for patients without dental benefits, we have made it affordable for many families who did not think they would be able to afford orthodontic treatment for themselves or their children. We are a general dentistry office, so many patients love that they can have all of their dental needs met in one office: you can schedule your and your family’s regular cleanings, exams, and general dental appointments at the same time as your orthodontic appointments to save you time and to ensure that your overall dental health is kept at the highest priority during your orthodontic treatment.

We would love to serve you and your family and help you achieve great health and a beautiful smile!
